Speedhawaii begins spotlighting new cars on the market with the current generation Subaru Impreza WRX STI!

In 2004 when Subaru brought the rally special STI version of it’s Impreza to America, it was an instant hit. Few cars can put down the numbers the STI can and keep the price right around 30K. The STI had supercar abilities for an un-supercar like price. The STI was a hit seller in America, which is why Subaru knew that the next-gen STI needed to be up to the high standard enthusiasts expected.

The next-gen STI was released in 2008 as a hatchback only, versus the sedan body style of the previous-gen STI. The STI differentiates itself from the regular WRX with big flared fenders and a bigger rear spoiler. It also features different front and rear bumpers.

The engine still remains as a 2.5L Turbocharged Flat Four, but producing 305BHP and 290ft-lb of torque, both up from the previous gen’s numbers. This STI utilizes Subaru’s Dual Active Valve Control System to complement the single-scroll turbo and top-mount intercooler.

The STI also features symmetrical AWD and a DCCD system which allows the user to control how much power is directed to the front or rear of the car. The STI also features a system called SI-Drive, which allows the user to switch throttle maps on the fly. The STI features Brembo brakes all around, 18×8.5 Wheels (forged BBS rims are an option)wrapped in 245/40/R18 size summer rubber.

The interior also has a number of improvements over the previous generations, giving it a more upmarket feel to it. A built-in Navigation system is optional.

Although road tests of the car mention that it drives a lot softer then the previous gen, this STI still has all the power, speed, and control of the old one, making this car still able to hang with cars twice its price. While the looks may be controversial, there’s no doubt that the hatchback body style allows the car to be much more user friendly on a daily basis. Subaru’s goal with this car was to make an STI that would appeal to a broader market. Prices start around 30,000. Say what you will about the looks and softness, but this car still remains one of the few performance bargains on the market today.
